  2. when they touch the ear.
  3. It’s true, there are more tears
  4. in sand than water.

  6. the song’s refrain
  7. in my head, my sawdust showing.
  8. My heart, your eyes
  9. is what the day made.
  10. There, the notes, the song,
  11. the besidedness to live
  12. on Saturday, to walk out,
  13. wanted to, right out the frame.
  14. The sadness, gas pumps,
  15. sunshine on oil,
  16. that crow overhead
  17. destroys the picture.
  18. Everything faking it so badly.
  19. What’s so wrong about the real,
  20. so off with clarity,
  21. dumbfuck, shirttail-hanging
  22. scatter-brained word.
  23. Shattered-pane world?
  24. The whir of the camera inside pictures
  25. but we want the voice to lift,
  26. don’t we, across the mini-plaza
  27. to where? How about
  28. pulling taffy for a living
  29. or a rabbit from one ideal-ology
  30. to another. That’s the trick
  31. isn’t it, parallel lives?
  32. You know, here a dumpster
  33. there a Dane. On the street
  34. I see birds, bricks, clouds
  35. I see a friend getting into her car
  36. I see myself in the puddle I see.
  37. And even if we pray to remain
  38. unabated, a minor chord
  39. can sometimes reconnoiter
  40. the most distant thoughts
  41. camouflaged in lace and literature.
  42. O western wind let’s not
  43. decorate the light with roseate diadems,
  44. plumbago shadows in the rushes.
  45. Haven’t we heard enough
  46. from the birds, their annual trips
  47. and cross-talk? Listen.
  48. The arc of a rocket
  49. is louder than a rainbow.
